Darling River 4 – Louth

River Lament: Darling, Murrumbidgee, Murray
Contemporary photographs of the Darling, Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers are accompanied by images of surrounding landscapes, local graveyards and text from the journals of early explorers. The mandala images invite an immersive and meditative experience of place. However, the accompanying compositions remind us of human complicity in damage and destruction of the landscape. While degradation of river systems is nothing new in the Australian environment, the focus on rivers is particularly poignant given the recent disastrous fish kills in the lower Darling, highlighting terrible mismanagement of the river system over many years.
